          ABOUT THE PROVIDENCE AREA

The capital of Rhode Island, Providence is one of the oldest cities in North America. Founded in 1636, modern Providence mixes historical sites with modern architecture. The internationally renowned Brown University makes its home in Providence, and the city offers a diverse and thriving population that includes strong Italian, Irish, African-American, and Hispanic communities. WoodSpring’s extended stay hotels in the region include one in Providence itself and a second in Sargus.

The T.F. Green Airport serves the city directly, although many travelers fly into Boston Logan International Airport and then drive or take the train to Providence. Providence’s satellite cities and suburbs include Sargus, Pawtucket, Cranston, Rumford, Johnston, Smithfield, Woonsocket, Warwick, Melrose, and Cumberland. Boston is an hour’s train ride to the north (90 minutes by car), and Hartford, Connecticut is an hour and forty-minute drive to the west.

Providence offers more restaurants per capita than any other city in the United States. Book lovers flock to the Providence Athenaeum, the library frequented by Poe, Whitman, and Lovecraft. You can experience the latest in virtual reality at Base Station VR Lounge, or watch flames dance on the water during the city’s summer WaterFire event.

Sports fans can cheer on the Brown Univerity Brown Bears and Providence College Friars. Both teams compete in the NCAA Division I. If you're in the mood for some hockey, the Providence Bruins compete in the AHL at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. Just outside Providence, the Pawtucket Red Sox play ball at McCoy Stadium.

The Atlantic Ocean makes Providence warmer than inland New England cities. Summers are hot and humid, with temperatures reaching 90℉ approximately ten days a year. Winters are cold and wet with an average of 34 inches of snow a year. Nor’easters can cause blizzard conditions during the winter. Like much of New England, Providence is beautiful in the fall, when the trees take on their autumn colors.
