ABOUT THE MINNEAPOLIS AREA
Minneapolis, Saint Paul, and their surrounding suburbs make up the Twin Cities metropolitan area, which has a combined population of 3.6 million. The larger of the two cities, Minneapolis is the birthplace of music legends Bob Dylan and Prince, and the city’s music scene continues to produce rap, hip-hop, folk, and alternative rock performers. Minneapolis is served by the Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport and the St. Paul Downtown Airport. St. Paul is a thirty-minute commute to the east, and Rochester lies 95 miles to the south. Minneapolis has plenty to offer nature lovers, with lakes, wetlands, and waterfalls connected by the Grand Rounds National Scenic Byway. If you're in the mood for shopping, the Mall of American in neighboring Bloomington is the largest mall in the United States and home to the Nickelodeon Universe theme park and Sea Life Minnesota Aquarium. If you'd rather take a trip to the past, the Hennepin History Museum offers a chance to explore the city’s history.
Minneapolis sports fans have plenty of teams to choose from. Four professional teams call the city home, including the Minnesota Timberwolves of the NBA, the NFL’s Minnesota Vikings, the MLB’s Minnesota Twins, and the Minnesota Lynx who play in the WNBA. Over in St. Paul, you can take in the thrills and spills of a hockey game with the NHL’s Minnesota Wild. If college sports are more your thing, cheer on the University of Minnesota’s Golden Gophers, who compete in Division I of the NCAA.
Minneapolis summers are hot and humid, with temperatures often in the eighties or higher. Winter brings the city’s coldest temperatures between December and March, with nightly lows in January of 4℉. The city sees all forms of precipitation, from snow and sleet to fog, heavy rain, and thunderstorms.
