ABOUT THE BOSTON AREA
The capital of Massachusetts, Boston has a rich history. Founded in 1630, the city played multiple roles in the American Revolution, from the Boston Massacre and Boston Tea Party to the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. Home to trophy-winning professional sports teams, world-class colleges, and fascinating historic sites, the city of 685,000 is the economic and cultural hub of Greater Boston, a metropolitan region of 4.8 million people. WoodSpring’s extended stay hotels in the Boston region include locations in Saugus, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island; and Merrimack, New Hampshire.
Two major airports serve Boston: the Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) and the Manchester-Boston Regional Airport (MHT). The city is fifty miles north of Providence and a 2.5-hour drive from Hartford, Connecticut. Boston’s satellite cities and suburbs include Saugus, Melrose, Everett, Lynn, Malden, Stoneham, Wakefield, Lynnfield, Medford, Somerville, Stoneham, Winthrop, Manchester, and Salem.
Boston is a center for higher education, law, medicine, and business. The financial industry, biotech, and information technology industries also contribute to the city’s economy. The city is one of the most important seaports on the East Coast, making it important for both the export/import industry and commercial fishing. Tourism plays an important role, with visitors spending over $8 billion a year.
Many of those tourists come to experience Boston’s important historical sites and museums. Learn about the events that sparked a revolution and birthed a nation at the Boston Tea Party Ships & Museum and Bunker Hill Monument. Discover thousands of aquatic species at the New England Aquarium, or picnic at the Christopher Columbus Waterfront Park. And remember, no visit to Boston is complete without taking a ride on the Swan Boats of the Public Garden lagoon.
Boston is home to three professional sports teams: the Boston Bruins (NFL), the Red Sox (MLB), and the Celtics (NBA). In the NFL, six-time Superbowl winners the New England Patriots represent Massachusetts, Vermont, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New Hampshire, and Maine. On the college front, Bostonians can cheer on three NCAA Division I teams: the Boston University Terriers, the Harvard University Crimson, and Northeastern University Huskies.
Summers in Boston are typically hot and humid, with July and August seeing highs in the low eighties. Spring and fall are usually cool, with fall bringing those famous New England autumn leaves. January is the coldest month, with average lows of 22℉. The city is prone to Nor’easter cyclones, which bring windstorms, snow, and rain.
