ABOUT THE SHREVEPORT AREA
Shreveport, the third largest city in Louisiana, is the cultural and educational hub of the “Ark-La-Tex” region, where the state lines of Arkansas, Louisiana, and Texas meet. Founded in 1836 by the Shreve Town Company, Shreveport is known for its colleges, including branches of Louisiana State University and Louisiana Tech, its annual Mardi Gras celebration, and its role in Louisiana's film industry. WoodSpring extended stay hotels in the region include one location in Shreveport and another in Bossier City, just across the Red River.
Shreveport is served by two airports--the Shreveport Downtown Airport (DTN) and Shreveport Regional Airport (SHV). The city’s suburbs and satellite cities include Bossier City, Adner, Red Chute, Bodcau, Eastwood Lakeview, Keithville, Wildwood South Bethany, and Wildoak. Barksdale Air Force Base lies just fifteen miles outside of Shreveport. Dallas, Texas is a three-hour drive to the west.
Once a center for the oil industry, Shreveport has transitioned to a growing service economy. The Port of Shreveport-Bossier includes an industrial park and steel mill, and the city is home to a number of riverboat casinos. State tax incentives have also made Shreveport popular with the film industry.
The highlight of the Shreveport year is undoubtedly Mardi Gras, but the city offers plenty of other sights and attractions. Try your luck at the Margaritaville Casinos or watch the sharks feed at the downtown Shreveport Aquarium. Explore the Multicultural Center of the South, thrill to the Barksdale Air Force Base Air Show, or take some time to shop at Bossier City Louisiana Boardwalk.
Shreveport has no professional athletic teams, but sports fans will find plenty of excitement at the collegiate level. The Centenary Gentlemen and Ladies compete in the NCAA Division III, while the Louisiana State University Shreveport Pilots compete in the NAIA. Amateur teams include the Shreveport Mudbugs junior ice hockey team and the Shreveport Rafters FC.
Shreveport sees approximately 51 inches of precipitation a year, with heavy thunderstorms in late summer and possible ice and sleet storms in the winter. Summers are typically hot, with highs of more than 90℉ about 91 days a year, and can be uncomfortably muggy, with some days seeing more than 90 percent humidity.
